Every implant begins with careful planning. Dr. Efner considers your bite, the surrounding teeth, and the final restoration to create a result that looks natural and functions comfortably.

She places many of the implants here in our Ventura office and works with trusted local oral surgeons for cases requiring specialized surgical care.

What a dental implant is

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It's a small titanium post placed in the jawbone, where the surrounding bone gradually grows onto its surface, anchoring it securely in place. This process, called osseointegration, typically takes approximately three months, although healing times vary. Once the implant is ready, it provides a stable foundation for a crown, a bridge, or a denture.

That's what sets implants apart. Unlike a traditional tooth-supported bridge, an implant can replace a missing tooth without reshaping the neighboring teeth. It also helps reduce bone loss in the area where the tooth is missing. Whether an implant or bridge is the better choice depends on the condition of the neighboring teeth, available bone, and your bite. Dr. Efner will help you understand the advantages and limitations of each.

Who implants are for

Implants can be a good fit if you:

• Are missing one tooth, several teeth, or all the teeth in an arch
• Have a tooth that can't be saved and will need to be removed
• Wear a denture or partial that slips, rubs or limits what you eat
• Want a stable, natural-looking alternative to a traditional bridge or removable denture

Good candidates generally have healthy gums, adequate bone to support the implant, and medical conditions that are well managed. If bone has been lost, bone grafting may make implant treatment possible. Dr. Efner performs bone grafting in our office when appropriate.

Age alone is rarely the deciding factor. Dr. Efner will review your medical history, medications, and imaging to determine whether implants are appropriate for you, along with the other options available.

What to expect, step by step

1. Consultation and planning

We begin with a comprehensive evaluation, including X-rays, photographs, digital scans, and 3D digital imaging for implant planning. Dr. Efner considers your overall oral health, bite, and the restoration the implant will support. You'll receive a written treatment plan outlining the recommended steps, estimated timeline and costs.

2. Placing the implant

Depending on your case, Dr. Efner may place the implant herself in our office or coordinate placement with one of our trusted local oral surgeons. The area is thoroughly numbed for the procedure. IV sedation is also available for appropriate patients and procedures.

3. Healing

Over the next few months, the surrounding bone heals around the implant, creating a stable foundation for your new tooth. Healing typically takes about three months, although some cases require longer. When appropriate, we can provide a temporary tooth or other replacement while your implant heals.

4. Your new tooth

Once the implant is ready, Dr. Efner designs your crown, bridge, or denture with careful attention to your bite, comfort, and appearance. For a single tooth, the goal is to blend naturally with the surrounding teeth. For larger restorations, we'll discuss the tooth shape, shade, and overall smile you'd like to achieve.

How it feels

The area is thoroughly numbed during implant placement, and we take our time to help you feel comfortable. Some tenderness afterward is normal and generally improves over the first few days. You'll receive aftercare instructions specific to your procedure.

Our calm, unhurried office also offers warm neck pillows, blankets, peaceful music to help you relax, along with personal viewing glasses so you can enjoy a show or movie during your visit.

Full-arch implants: All-on-4, All-on-X and implant dentures

If you wear dentures or are missing most or all of your teeth, implants can give you teeth that stay in place. A fixed full-arch restoration, often called All-on-4 or All-on-X, is a complete set of teeth secured to several implants. It isn't taken out at night, it doesn't cover the roof of your mouth, and there's nothing to snap in and out, so it looks, feels and works much more like natural teeth. For patients who are good candidates, it's usually the option we prefer.

A removable implant-supported denture, sometimes called a snap-on denture, is another option. It clips onto two or more implants, so it moves far less than a regular denture and makes chewing and speaking more comfortable, but it still comes out for cleaning. It can suit patients who want a simpler, lower-cost option or who don't have enough bone for a fixed restoration. Dr. Efner will help you compare the options based on your bone, bite, lifestyle, and goals.

Caring for your implant

Dental implants can't develop cavities, but the gums and bone supporting them still need care. Bacteria can cause inflammation around an implant and, if left untreated, may lead to bone loss. Daily cleaning and regular professional maintenance help protect your implant and the surrounding tissues.

With proper care, dental implants can function for decades, although their longevity varies. The crown, bridge, or denture attached to an implant may eventually need repair or replacement.

Cost, insurance and financing

The cost of dental implants depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the condition of the supporting bone, and the type of restoration needed. Some cases also require additional procedures, such as bone grafting. We'll explain the recommended treatment and provide an itemized written estimate before you begin.
